Gary grew up in Pasadena and graduated from Deer Park High School in 1971 after a highly celebrated high school sports career. Upon graduation, he was drafted and served his country in the Air Force briefly and finished his commitment in the Air Force Reserves.

When Gary was drafted, he had just begun his career at Houston Lighting and Power. While Gary was serving his country, HL&P reserved his position until he returned. By the end of the 20th century Gary was promoted into management which lead to his final position as a Contract Coordinator which given his social personality, suited him well.

Gary never met a stranger. If he did not know someone when he arrived, he knew them when he left. He had a gift for talking and a soft heart.
