Obituary for
Lucille Geneva Sims (Etie)
Lucille Etie Sims, age 92, passed into eternal rest on Friday evening, June 30, 2017 in her Houston home.
Lucille is deeply missed by her children Marvalyn Jeanine Hembree of Houston, James Marvin Sims, Jr. (Linda) of Cloudcroft, NM, and Jay Alan Sims (Margarita) of Galveston. She is lovingly remembered as “Grapie,” “Paparge” and “Grandma” by her grandchildren Loretta Manriquez (Andrew), Helen Brennan (Kevin), Nathan Hembree (Sara), Amy Carpenter, Laura Kooyers (Brandon), Joseph Sims, Christopher Sims, Jay Alan Sims, Jr. and Emily Sims. Her precious legacy also includes 15 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson, her siblings Bettye Nell Hamilton & Walter Etie, Jr., and a host of relatives and friends. Lucille is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, James Marvin Sims, as well as her sisters Genevieve King & Doris Hamilton, and brothers Eugene Etie & Walter Apffel. Family was her greatest love.
Born March 12, 1925 in Houston to the late Walter August Etie & Clara Alberta Etie (nee Apffel), Lucille graduated from Reagan High School with the class of 1942 full of amazing talent. Lucille was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She excelled in cooking, gardening, art and needlework. She drove a school bus, had an in-home daycare, and used her incredible sewing skills as co-owner of Everbest Draperies. When Lucille & Marvin retired to Galveston, she served as secretary of the Bay Harbor Improvement Association and was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. Following Marvin’s death in 1994, Lucille returned to Houston and became a member of Trinity Downtown Lutheran Church, where she was welcomed and loved.
Visitation will be held from 9 am to10 am Friday, July 7, 2017 at Rosewood Funeral Home at Old Humble Rd & Rankin Rd. The funeral service will take place at 10 am, with the Reverend Donald G. Black officiating. Burial will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park in Humble. Pallbearers are Nathan Hembree, Joseph Sims, Christopher Sims, Jay Alan Sims, Jr., Andrew Manriquez, Kevin Brennan, Gene Hembree and Richard Hildebrandt.
Lucille loved flowers as expressions of God’s beautiful creation. Those wishing to honor her memory may do so with flowers or with a donation to, the Bay Harbor Improvement Association, or to the visitation ministry of Trinity Downtown Lutheran Church.
The family wishes to thank Seasons Hospice, especially nurse Randy, and At Your Side Home Care, particularly Annette, for the kindness extended to Lucille and family during her illness.
