Obituary for
George Smith
George O. Smith, 70, passed away July 3, 2020, at his home in New Caney after brief complications from
cancer. He was born October 5, 1949, in Conroe, the son of John and Jessie Smith.
George served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, where his official title was Stock Clerk,
however he was also a helicopter gunner and engaged in hand to hand combat. After separating from
the military he married Bess, and they remained together over 47 years.
For the last 21 years George and Bess have owned Spirit Expo, of which George was the face, and heart of the company. Though work consumed most of his life, George would never pass on an opportunity for a round of golf. George will be remembered by those who loved him as a kind and generous soul, that never met a stranger he didn’t like. He was someone that everyone knew they could count on for anything at any time. He was our “fixer.” His sense of humor will never be forgotten as well.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Jean Fowler. Survived by his wife Bess;Four sisters; Carolyn Hargett, Joyce Stanfield, Ann Phillips, and Mary Turner; two sons, Scott Smith, and Robert Shelby; daughter/grand-daughter, Leanne Smith; Four additional grandchildren, RJ Shelby, Trent Shelby, Georgia Smith, and Faith Smith; numerous nieces and nephews, including Jason Wiser, who has been greatly influenced by “Geor-George.”
A service of remembrance will be held 2:00 PM July 9 at Rosewood Funeral Home,
22271 HWY 59 North, Porter. Interment will be at Rosewood, Porter, as well.
