Obituary for Kathryn Ann Garg (Alexander)

Kathryn Ann Garg (Alexander)
Kathryn Ann (Alexander) Garg, known as K’Ann to some, Kitty to others, went to be with the Lord on April 5, 2023, surrounded by her daughters. She was 77 years old.

K’Ann was born in 1945 in Charleroi, Pennsylvania to Adam Wilson “A.W.” and Catherine (Rusilko) Alexander. She grew up with her older sister Joyce and younger brother Danny in a small community surrounded by many aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as her cherished grandmother, Antonia Rusilko, who she called her “Bubba.” After finishing high school, K’Ann matriculated from nursing school in 1966. She had her first daughter, Kristine Ann that year, and 15 months later, gave birth to Tracy Lynn in 1967.

Kitty proved herself to be a skillful RN, rising to the position of Charge Nurse quickly. She prided herself on her ability to balance a large patient load and her team of nurses while still providing compassionate care to the patients she served.

Kitty was an avid bowler, and was quite proud of her very own red bowling ball and the bowling team she was a part of, where she bowled an average of 165. In 1976, her bowling partner set her up on a blind date with a handsome dark-haired man who wore bell bottom jeans and drove a sports car, Vijay Garg. He would later become her husband of nearly 30 years. The pair moved to Houston, Texas with their two daughters in 1980 and shortly thereafter, welcomed their third daughter, Sabrina Catherine in 1983.

Throughout her life, she continued with her passion for nursing, serving her patients in various aspects of the healthcare spectrum, from inpatient nursing care, to home health services where she lovingly took care of some of the most impoverished people in Houston. She was at the forefront of providing nursing services to those diagnosed with AIDS in the earliest years when the medical community didn’t know much about the disease, and became a fierce advocate for their care. She eventually transitioned to home hospice nursing, and became the director of a hospice center in Houston, where she was beloved by her coworkers and patients alike.

At home, Kitty taught her daughters and grandchildren the importance of showing kindness to others, and always providing a helping hand, hot meal or warm smile to those in need. She oftentimes had a mischievous twinkle in her eye, and passed on her wicked sense of humor to more than a few of her family members, commonly delivering zingers that would leave everyone around her doubled over in laughter. She loved decorating for all of the holidays. She went all out for birthday parties and Halloween, was the queen of crafting and costume making, whipped up huge feasts for Thanksgiving and Christmas with tables bursting with family and love, and created the most precious of memories for her family in the process.

Kitty is preceded in death by her mother, father, sister, brother and husband. She is survived by her daughters Kristine (Steve) Potter, Tracy (Chuck) Burns, Sabrina (Jason) Young, grandchildren Alisha, Bobby (Leslee), Trevor, Katy (Asa), Ashley, Rosalie, Noah, and great-grandchildren Miles, Kamryn, Zachary, Josie, Carter and Mya. She will be missed more than words can express.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Fisher House Foundation which provides housing to families of veterans who are hospitalized, in memory of her beloved father who served his country as an Army Pilot in WWII.
