Obituary for Hubert Benton "Ben" Nowlin Jr.

Hubert Benton "Ben" Nowlin Jr.
Hubert Benton “Ben” Nowlin, Jr. was born in Houston, Texas on January 24, 1964. He is preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Peggy Nowlin, as well as his best friend, Lawrence Womack. Mr. Nowlin is survived by his wife of 31 years, Gay Nowlin, and son, Samuel Nowlin. He also leaves behind his brother, Michael Nowlin and wife, Elizabeth and his niece, Kristen Nowlin.

Ben grew up as a member of Lindale Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. He later attended Memorial Baptist on Airline Drive, where he met and married his wife, Gay. His family’s recent church membership was at Spring Baptist Church. He has often worked with the youth at churches where he and Gay worshipped.

Ben’s employment started at Sears North Shepherd as a teen in the paint department. Later he began working as a route salesman at Martin Linen, where he worked for 18 years. He was promoted to Route
Supervisor around the time he and Gay married. His last employment was with Grocer’s Supply Company. He learned how to drive an 18-wheeler, graduating at the top of his class. He delivered groceries around the state of Texas. After a shoulder injury, Ben retired to take care of his family.

He was very proud of his high school, Jeff Davis High School, and after graduation he loved to follow their sport stats and attend ball games. He loved the Panthers, and his favorite colors were purple and gray, as you can see are being represented here today in his honor.

Ben learned clock repair from his Uncle Jack, and he ran a repair shop for several years in Livingston, Texas after Jack retired. He also loved to study the weather, and at one time dreamed of being a weatherman. His other hobby was astronomy, and he enjoyed sharing his knowledge of planets and stars with others.

His presence will be deeply missed, both by his immediate family, his friends, and many other acquaintances. His quick wit, gentle spirit, and giving nature are traits not often seen today. Ben knew Jesus as his Lord and Savior and is surely celebrating a reunion with those who have gone on before.

Gay has asked that in lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Ben's memory to the following:
